Gemfibrozil

Heart Muscle Thickening (HCM)

In some children and young adults, primary CoQ10 deficiency has been linked to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), where the heart muscle becomes abnormally thick and stiff despite the absence of more common causes like longstanding hypertension. Case series and reports describe patients with genetically confirmed CoQ10 biosynthetic defects who develop HCM alongside other mitochondrial features such as exercise intolerance, muscle weakness, or neurologic symptoms, and cardiac imaging often shows concentric or asymmetric left ventricular hypertrophy. The hopeful aspect is that early recognition and CoQ10 supplementation have, in some documented cases, led to improved cardiac function or stabilization of wall thickness over time, making CoQ10 deficiency a particularly important and potentially treatable consideration in otherwise unexplained or familial‑appearing HCM. This medication is commonly used for High Cholesterol.

Nutrients Depleted by Gemfibrozil

Some side effects may be linked to nutrient depletion caused by this medication.

  • CoQ10Depletion

Fibrates are a class of medications used to lower cholesterol and triglycerides. They work by activating peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs), which are transcription factors that regulate gene expression. Some studies have suggested that fibrates may interfere with the absorption of Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), a nutrient that is important for mitochondrial function. COQ10 supplementation should be considered to avoid a potential deficiency when taking this drug therapy.

  • B12Suppression

Research demonstrates that fibrates, particularly fenofibrate, are known to increase homocysteine levels. Elevated levels of homocysteine is associated with increased risk of a range of health problems including atherosclerosis, stroke, and neurological diseases, and vitamin Bs including vitamin B12 helps facilitate the breakdown of homocysteine and may be helpful in reducing homocysteine levels.
