Cimetidine

Cimetidine & Vitamin D

Depletes Vitamin D. This medication is commonly used for Stomach Acid

Why Cimetidine affects Vitamin D

Certain medications can interfere with how your body processes vitamin D. A study found that cimetidine, a medication used to treat heartburn and ulcers, can decrease the activity of an enzyme (25-hydroxylase) crucial for converting vitamin D into its usable form. A specific study found that cimetidine administration lowered this enzyme activity by 22%.  Supplementing with vitamin D when utilizing H2 antagonists/blockers such as Cimetidine (Tagamet HB) should be considered.
